Udhayanidhi Stalin Sparks Controversy with Remarks on Sanatan Dharma

Chennai, May 12: Udhayanidhi Stalin, a leader of the DMK in Tamil Nadu, has once again ignited political turmoil with his controversial remarks regarding Sanatan Dharma. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala has criticized the Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress, accusing them of disrespecting Sanatan Dharma for electoral gains.

Poonawala took to the social media platform X, stating, “This is not a coincidence; it is a calculated use of the vote bank. Udhayanidhi Stalin has reiterated his call to abolish Sanatan Dharma in the Tamil Nadu Assembly. Previously, the Supreme Court labeled his comments as hate speech, yet Congress supported his statement.”

He further asserted, “The Congress, TMC, SP, and DMK share a common agenda: to insult Sanatan Hindus and exploit the vote bank.”

In a video message, Poonawala emphasized that opposition parties have not changed their stance despite losing elections. He reiterated that Udhayanidhi Stalin has once again called for the elimination of Sanatan Dharma. Previously, he made similar remarks that were condemned by the Supreme Court as hate speech, but the Stalin government took no action and instead promoted him to Deputy Chief Minister.

Poonawala also targeted Congress, noting that the party has never condemned Stalin’s statements. He sarcastically remarked, “Once again, insult Sanatan to earn applause from the vote bank; this has become their political strategy. The public has taught them a lesson in the elections, yet they continue to target Sanatan.”

During his first speech as the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Tuesday, Udhayanidhi Stalin stated, “Sanatan Dharma divides people, and it must be abolished.”

In September 2023, he had compared Sanatan Dharma to diseases like dengue, malaria, and COVID-19, asserting that it should be eradicated, not merely opposed. His comments sparked widespread controversy across the nation.

BJP spokesperson C.R. Kesavan also commented on X, stating, “Udhayanidhi Stalin is the Rahul Gandhi of Tamil Nadu, spreading divisive and hate-filled politics. Rahul Gandhi mocked the sacred ‘Sengol’ and disrespected the ‘Pran Pratishtha’ ceremony of the Ram Temple. Like Rahul Gandhi, who has been rejected by the public in the last three Lok Sabha elections, Udhayanidhi Stalin continues his toxic rhetoric despite being punished by the people of Tamil Nadu. What else can you expect from the divisive DMK?”

Kesavan added, “This is the same party that opposed lighting ‘Karthigai Deepam’ and whose Chief Minister failed to wish the people of Tamil Nadu a Happy Diwali. A DMK MP and former Union Minister even made an offensive remark, stating that Hinduism is a threat not only to India but to the entire world. These habitual offenders should remember that a temple ‘Gopuram’ is inscribed in the ‘state emblem’ of Tamil Nadu, and the people will never forget or forgive such blatant disrespect and contempt for their religion and sentiments.”
