New Delhi: On the eve of Republic Day, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced the prestigious Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian honours in India.
This year, four prominent business personalities have been recognised in the trade and industry category. Uday Kotak, founder and director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, has been awarded the Padma Bhushan for his outstanding contribution to the sector.
Additionally, Ashok Khade, founder and managing director of Maharashtra-based shipping company Das Offshore Engineering Private Limited, and Satyanarayan Nuval, founder of private defence firm Solar Industries, have been honoured with the Padma Shri award.
Posthumously, T.T. Jagannathan, associated with Prestige, a company known for manufacturing kitchen appliances, has also received the Padma Shri award.
The government has conferred the Padma Awards on a total of 131 individuals this year. This includes five recipients of the Padma Vibhushan, 13 awarded the Padma Bhushan, and 113 honoured with the Padma Shri.
Among the awardees, 19 women have been recognised. The list also features six individuals from foreign, NRI, PIO, and OCI categories, along with 16 posthumous recipients, which includes two joint awards (counted as one).
In India’s hierarchy of civilian honours, the Bharat Ratna ranks highest, followed by the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri in descending order of precedence.
The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order, and the Padma Shri for distinguished service in any field.
These awards are traditionally announced every year on Republic Day and are presented by the President of India at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, usually around March or April.
The Padma Awards recognise individuals who have demonstrated excellence and long-term impact in fields such as art, literature, trade, social service, medicine, education, public service, and others.
