Washington, March 17: Senior lawmakers from the Democratic Party in the United States have raised new concerns regarding the decision to sell advanced artificial intelligence (AI) chips to China. They argue that the approval of this sale by the Trump administration could jeopardize U.S. national security.
Ranking member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Congressman Gregory W. Meeks, and ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, Senator Elizabeth Warren, expressed heightened concerns after receiving details about the initial approval related to this deal.
In a joint statement, they said, “In December, we requested the Commerce Department to comply with the law and inform us about any approvals granted by the Trump administration for the sale of advanced AI chips to China.”
They further stated, “We have finally received information about the administration’s first license approval, and we are now more concerned than ever that the Trump administration is undermining U.S. national security by approving this sale.”
Meeks and Warren have urged Congress to take action on this matter. They emphasized that to protect U.S. economic and national security, Congress should create bipartisan legislation to prevent China from acquiring advanced American technology.
This controversy began when the Trump administration approved the export of advanced AI chips to China. The decision was publicly disclosed by NVIDIA on February 25. These chips are considered crucial for cutting-edge computing technology and could also be used in military applications.
Meeks and Warren noted that in December, they had requested detailed information from the Commerce Department regarding this decision under the Export Control Reform Act of 2018. According to this law, when senior members of a congressional committee request information, the department must provide relevant documents, including license applications.
Both leaders also pointed out that the technology in question has potential military applications. Therefore, decisions related to the export of such technology are extremely sensitive.
