According to reports, both soldiers were travelling in a car towards Batheri to attend their friend’s wedding. However, near the village of Darlog, their car went out of control and plunged into a deep gorge approximately 600 meters below. Both soldiers died on the spot. The Padhar police team took possession of the bodies at the site and sent them for post-mortem at the Zonal Hospital in Mandi. After the post-mortem, the bodies were handed over to their families. The soldiers were cremated with full military honours in their native villages of Balhada and Dusra Khabu, attended by a large number of people. Mahendra Kumar was serving in the J&K Rifles.

Nitesh’s grandfather stated that Nitesh was also an excellent sportsman. He had returned home after participating in army sports events in Solan to attend his friend’s wedding. Nitesh’s family hails from Balhada village in Baldwara Tehsil. His father, Suresh Kumar, had also served in the army and was martyred in 1994 in Chamba. Nitesh was their only son.
