Two imprisoned for raping minor in Tripura

Agartala, March 25 : District courts of Khowai and South Tripura in two separate cases of rape convicted two people and imprisoned them to jail under several sections of the POCSO Act and Indian Penal Code on Thursday. According to report, the District and Session judge of Belonia South Tripura awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 15,000 to one Arjun Debnath (29) for raping his minor niece last year. When the parents of the victim took her to hospital following an illness in June last year, the doctor found her carrying a three months pregnancy. The girl later explained details of the incidents and her parents lodged an FIR against the accused Arjun at Baikhora police station of South Tripura and Arjun was arrested. Police filed the charge-sheet within three months before the Court based upon which the accused was convicted under section 376 (3) of IPC and section 6 of POCSO Act. Meanwhile, Khowai district court awarded 25 years old Jitendra Goyala to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 50,000 for abducting a minor girl from Khowai-Kamalpur highway in February 2019 when the victim was waiting for transport to reach her maternal uncle’s house. The convict taking advantage of the situation and knowing each other, Jitendra took the girl in his car and instead of dropping her at her place of her relative, she was taken to Guwahati. The family members of the victim lodged an FIR with the Khowai police station after a few days and the convict was arrested and the victim was rescued. The Court after examining the deposition of 13 witnesses and other evidence, convicted Jitendra under IPC section 366, 376 (2) (N) and Section 4 of POCSO Act and sent them to jail for 10 years and imposed a penalty of Rs 55,000.
