Two BJP lawmakers suspended in Bengal assembly

Kolkata, Mar 9 : Two BJP lawmakers – Sudip Mukherjee and Mihir Goswami – were on Wednesday suspended for the rest of the Budget session of the West Bengal legislative assembly for their alleged misconduct in the House on March 7. The suspension order was pronounced by Speaker Biman Banerjee after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Partha Chatterjee tabled a motion against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs for allegedly creating chaos during Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar’s inaugural address, which was disrupted. Chatterjee accused the duo of indulging in slogan shouting, waving placards and creating disturbance during the Governor’s address. The motion was passed by voice vote. Goswami represents Natabari in Cooch Behar district and Mukherjee represents Purulia. The BJP’s legislative party leaders alleged that the two lawmakers were made scapegoats to divert the attention from the real “issue” on the day. They said they have been given names of five Trinamool MLAs, including that of minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, for alleged ” heckling” of the Governor on March 7. They claimed the suspension was a deviation from the actual issue and they would continue to protest in and out of the House. “The suspension is a threat from the treasury bench to BJP MLAs to remain silent,” a BJP legislator said. The Governor had on that day tabled his address after reading the first and last lines of his speech in the midst of the din and left the House. PC-SJC SSP RN
