Dhaka, April 5: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) faced a significant setback during a meeting on Saturday. Within hours, three directors announced their resignations. Fayazur Rahman, Shaniyan Tanin, and Mehrab Alam Chowdhury stepped down, bringing the total number of resignations to six in less than six months before the elections, raising concerns about the board’s stability.
Earlier in January, Ishtiaq Sadik resigned citing personal reasons. Last month, Amjad Hussain also resigned shortly after being removed from the media chair. On Thursday, Yasir Mohammad Faisal, a government-appointed director, also left his position. The recent resignations have intensified the situation.
The meeting was chaired by BCB President Aminul Islam. However, details regarding the discussions that led to the resignations remain undisclosed. New media department head Mohammad Moksedul Kamal stated that he learned about Fayazur’s resignation through the media.
He noted that there was no discussion within the board regarding this issue, and the resigning directors attributed their decisions to personal reasons. Fayazur had recently criticized the BCB for its alleged inaction in the operation of the Dhaka League, indicating internal discontent.
Amidst these ongoing resignations, the atmosphere within the BCB is already under pressure. An investigation into last October’s elections, mandated by the government, is underway, with a report expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Sports soon. Sports Minister Aminul Haque has also hinted at the formation of a separate committee to investigate why the Bangladesh team did not participate in the recent T20 World Cup.
The continuous resignations and increasing scrutiny suggest instability and administrative challenges within the BCB.
