Washington, 25 August (Kiran News). US President Donald Trump welcomed South Korea’s new President, Lee Jae-myung, at the White House on Monday. The two leaders held important talks on trade and defence cooperation.

A few hours before the meeting, President Trump posted on social media claiming there was a “purge or revolution” happening in South Korea and warned that he would not trade with Seoul. However, it was not clear what Trump was referring to in his statement.
South Korea has been facing political turmoil for several months. Former President Yoon Suk-yeol was removed from office last December after imposing martial law, leading to a change in power.
Ahead of this meeting, it was expected that the two leaders would clarify the details of the trade agreement reached in July. Under this deal, Seoul had promised to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the US. According to the agreement, a 15% tariff was set on South Korean goods, while Trump had earlier threatened tariffs as high as 25%.
