Washington, October 22 (Daily Kiran): The planned second summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has been put on hold, a senior US administration official confirmed on Tuesday. The meeting was earlier proposed to be held in Budapest, but officials now say there are no immediate plans for the two leaders to meet.
The development comes days after President Trump said in a phone call last Thursday that he and Putin might meet within two weeks. However, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump downplayed the urgency of the summit, saying he didn’t want the meeting to be a “waste of time.”
“I’ll let you know in the next couple of days what we’re doing,” Trump said, adding that while he remains open to a future meeting with Putin, it is no longer a top priority for his administration.
Diplomatic Efforts Put on Hold
Last week, Trump had announced that the US and Russia had agreed to hold high-level adviser meetings in preparation for the summit. Following that, officials expected US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to meet his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov to lay the groundwork for the Trump-Putin talks.
However, diplomatic communication between the two sides has reportedly slowed down. A source familiar with the matter said that Rubio and Lavrov held a phone conversation on Monday, during which they expressed divergent expectations about the potential resolution of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The US official added that while the Rubio-Lavrov discussion was “constructive,” both sides agreed that an in-person meeting was not necessary at this stage.
Consequently, there are no plans for a Trump-Putin meeting in the near future, the official confirmed.
