Trump Praises India’s Approach to Illegal Immigration, Highlights Strategic Ties
Washington, January 29, 2025: US President Donald Trump expressed confidence in India’s ability to “do what’s right” on the deportation of undocumented migrants following his first phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi since his inauguration. The leaders discussed key issues, including immigration, trade, security, and the Indo-Pacific partnership, in what the White House described as a “productive call.”
Immigration and Bilateral Commitments
The conversation between Trump and Modi touched on the deportation of illegal migrants, with India reaffirming its policy of accepting nationals overstaying abroad after verification of documents and nationality. This aligns with Trump’s immigration crackdown, underscored by recent executive orders targeting undocumented migrants in the US, including an estimated 725,000 undocumented Indians as of 2024, according to the Pew Research Center.
India’s Foreign Ministry stated its readiness to repatriate Indians overstaying globally as long as procedures are followed. Trump highlighted the importance of addressing immigration challenges while emphasizing India’s growing role in fostering fair international practices.
Strengthening Trade and Defence Ties
The leaders discussed avenues to enhance bilateral trade, with Trump advocating for a more equitable trade relationship. He encouraged India to increase its procurement of US-made security equipment, signaling a push for deeper economic and defense collaboration.
The White House statement reaffirmed a commitment to advancing the strategic partnership, particularly in the Indo-Pacific Quad framework, which also includes Japan and Australia. India is set to host the Quad leaders’ summit for the first time later this year, highlighting its pivotal role in regional security and geopolitics.
Modi-Trump Cordial Relations
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Modi referred to Trump as a “dear friend,” expressing a shared commitment to a “mutually beneficial and trusted partnership.” The rapport between the two leaders, forged during Trump’s previous term (2017-2021), was marked by both camaraderie and challenges, including a tariff war that strained trade relations.
Despite past disputes over trade and tariffs, India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar noted in November that India was optimistic about working with Trump’s administration, emphasizing mutual interests in economic growth and strategic security.
Focus on the Indo-Pacific and Beyond
Both leaders underscored the importance of security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. The call also highlighted the shared commitment to advancing partnerships that address global challenges. The Quad partnership, seen as a counterbalance to growing regional tensions, remains a cornerstone of their collaboration.
A New Phase in US-India Relations?
Analysts believe the evolving relationship between Modi and Trump will be pivotal in addressing long-standing trade and immigration concerns. Trump’s earlier criticism of India’s tariffs and his call for fairer trade practices could present hurdles, but the leaders’ cordial ties may help navigate these challenges.
As India hosts the Quad leaders’ summit and continues its trajectory as a global power, the Modi-Trump partnership will likely shape the future of US-India relations in this critical decade.
