Tragic Truck Accident Near Gwaliors Sheetala Mata Temple Claims 12 Lives

A truck accident near Sheetala Mata Temple in Gwalior has resulted in 12 fatalities and over 25 injuries, prompting calls for accountability.

Gwalior, October 18 (Daily Kiran) : A devastating accident occurred near the historic Sheetala Mata Temple in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, on October 18. A truck, loaded with rice bags, lost control while descending a hill and crashed into several shops near the temple, impacting around 50 people. Tragically, at least 12 individuals have died, and more than 25 others, including two police officers and several children, have sustained injuries.

Witnesses reported that the truck, which was speeding down the hill from the direction of Chinor, veered off course and collided with shops located near the temple’s main entrance. The impact caused significant damage to multiple storefronts and also destroyed several two-wheeled vehicles parked nearby.

Emergency services quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured, with approximately five individuals in critical condition. The bodies of the deceased have been taken to Gwalior’s Jayarogya Hospital for identification.

A local resident expressed the chaos that unfolded, stating, “When I looked around, there was immense panic and confusion. People were screaming and searching for their loved ones. It was heartbreaking to see individuals trapped under the truck. This incident is a result of gross negligence by the Gwalior administration.”

The resident emphasized the deep emotional impact on the community, highlighting the temple’s significance to local faith. “Our beliefs have been profoundly shaken. This temple is sacred, where even coconuts are not broken. It is heartbreaking that such a tragedy has occurred. I urge the government and Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to visit Gwalior, provide compensation to the victims’ families, and ensure free treatment for the injured. If this does not happen, I will begin a hunger strike at the hospital. Justice must be served, and we cannot tolerate this injustice.”

A shopkeeper, Bablu Prajapati, shared his experience, noting that his father managed the family shop, which was also affected. “There were two relatives visiting, making a total of four people in the shop who are now injured. All are receiving treatment in the hospital,” he explained. He attributed the accident to the truck’s excessive speed, which led to the destruction of two to three shops.

Historically, the Sheetala Mata Temple attracts millions of devotees during the Navratri festival, leading to road closures for large vehicles. Authorities are currently investigating how the truck gained access to the area. Officials have promised to look into the matter to determine who allowed the truck entry and to address any negligence involved. Additionally, the administration is providing assistance to those affected by the tragedy.
