Peshawar, October 15 (Daily Kiran) : A devastating incident occurred in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Thursday when the roof of a private school collapsed, leading to the tragic deaths of 33 individuals, including 31 children and two female teachers. According to local media reports, the information was confirmed by Lady Reading Hospital (LRH), where many of the injured were taken for treatment.
Over 50 people sustained injuries in the disaster. LRH indicated that 53 children, predominantly boys, were admitted to the hospital, with 33 confirmed dead. Seventeen children were later discharged following treatment. All the deceased children were aged 14 or younger.
Muhammad Asim, a spokesperson for LRH, announced that an emergency had been declared at the hospital, with senior officials present in the trauma ward to oversee the treatment of the injured. Some victims were reported to be in critical condition.
Mian Saeed, the Capital City Police Officer (CCPO), informed reporters that the owner of the school had been detained, and a case would be filed regarding the incident. He noted that the building’s construction was poorly executed and that its location in narrow alleys complicated rescue operations. The school had an enrollment of 110 students.
Members of the Pakistan Army arrived at the scene to assist rescue and relief agencies in locating the trapped children and staff. The Deputy Commissioner of Peshawar, Afak Wazir, confirmed that the rescue operation had concluded, stating that all debris had been cleared and no injured children remained trapped.
Earlier, the Deputy Commissioner had told Dawn that several students were trapped under the rubble when the roof of Al-Khair School collapsed while they were in their classrooms.
