
Chandigarh, June 6: A devastating road accident in Punjab’s Firozpur district claimed the lives of at least eight individuals and left 11 others seriously injured. The collision occurred between a pickup truck and a heavy truck on Saturday morning.
The victims were members of a single family traveling to a religious site in Amritsar district to perform the last rites for a deceased relative. Approximately 25 family members were en route when the accident happened around 5:40 AM on the Firozpur-Fazilka road.
The impact of the crash was so severe that the pickup truck was dragged for several meters, resulting in extensive damage. Emergency responders, including police and local residents, had to cut through the wreckage to rescue those trapped inside.
Four individuals died at the scene, while another four succumbed to their injuries en route to the hospital. Rajinder Singh, the Senior Superintendent of Police in Firozpur, confirmed that most of the deceased were from the same family, who were heading to immerse the ashes of a family member in the Beas River.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The injured were transported to the civil hospital in Firozpur, where Dr. Nikhil Gupta, a senior medical officer, reported that several critically injured patients were referred to Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital in Faridkot for further treatment.
Witnesses stated that the truck driver lost control, leading to the catastrophic collision. Autopsies on the deceased are currently underway.
In a related incident on the same day, police reported that at least eight people were injured when a bus traveling from Delhi to Manali crashed on the national highway in Karnal district, Haryana.
