New Delhi, July 2: A devastating accident occurred in a stone quarry in Bengaluru, Karnataka, resulting in the deaths of seven workers. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed their profound sorrow over the incident. Several others have been injured, and there are concerns that more workers may still be trapped under the debris, potentially increasing the death toll.
President Murmu took to social media platform X to convey her condolences, stating, “I am saddened by the loss of lives in the quarry accident in Bengaluru’s urban district. My heartfelt sympathies are with the grieving families. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”
Vice President Radhakrishnan also expressed his grief, saying, “The loss of precious lives in the quarry accident in Bengaluru is deeply painful. My condolences are with the bereaved families. I wish for the quick and complete recovery of the injured.”
Prime Minister Modi remarked, “I am deeply saddened by the news of lives lost in the quarry accident in Bengaluru. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the families who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar expressed his sorrow, stating that the deaths of seven workers due to a rock collapse in the Madapattana area of South Bengaluru is extremely tragic. He prayed for the peace of the deceased’s souls and the swift recovery of the injured. He emphasized that ensuring the safety of workers in mines is the responsibility of the mine owners, and the government will take strict action against those violating regulations.
According to officials, the accident occurred around 5 AM on Thursday in a stone quarry located in the Madapattana area of Bengaluru South Taluk. Initial reports indicate that approximately 20 workers were working in the quarry at the time. Following a blast the day before, the workers were excavating about 40 feet below ground when a large section of rock suddenly collapsed on them.
The identities of the deceased workers have not yet been confirmed. Preliminary information suggests that the deceased are migrant workers from Bihar, while some of the injured are reported to be residents of Karnataka. Five seriously injured workers have been admitted to R.R. Hospital for treatment.
Currently, police, district administration, and rescue teams are conducting relief and rescue operations at the site. Efforts are ongoing to locate trapped workers by clearing the debris. Officials state that several bodies are still buried under heavy rocks, which are being retrieved.
