Srinagar, August 1: A Border Security Force (BSF) Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) was found dead in the Boniyar area of Baramulla district, Jammu and Kashmir, with a gunshot wound.
Senior officials reported that the deceased ASI was identified as Shiv Datt, a 56-year-old resident of Shoran village in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh. He was serving with the 175th Battalion of the BSF and was deployed in the Boniyar area with E Company.
Authorities suspect that he may have died by suicide, having shot himself with his service rifle. A team from the Boniyar police station promptly arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
The BSF is tasked with securing the International Border (IB), conducting anti-infiltration operations, and providing internal security support in Jammu and Kashmir. Their responsibilities include safeguarding the designated international borders against unauthorized crossings and monitoring the movement of militants and illegal activities.
Additionally, the BSF plays a crucial role in anti-smuggling operations, preventing the illegal transport of weapons, drugs, and restricted goods, including monitoring threats posed by drones.
This prominent paramilitary force also assists in maintaining public safety in interior areas by deploying specialized companies to support local police and security grids. Community engagement efforts include training residents in border areas and Village Defense Groups (VDGs) on self-defense and vigilance.
The BSF is instrumental in counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, maintaining a robust grid against infiltration along the IB and Line of Control (LoC), neutralizing cross-border threats, and providing essential intelligence.
