Lucknow, June 23: Congress spokesperson Surendra Rajput has described the recent fire incident in Lucknow as an act of institutional murder. He called for legal action against the state government while addressing various issues, including the inclusion of Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs into the Shinde faction and the formation of a new committee by rebel TMC legislators.
Rajput criticized Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s decision to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the fire incident, stating, “This event is deeply tragic. The untimely deaths of children with dreams for the future have shaken everyone. It’s unclear who should be held accountable. Officials accept bribes to construct buildings, while contractors and businessmen pay bribes to have them built. The entire system is flawed; one person cannot fix it.”
He further asserted, “If the government genuinely intends to take action, it must first accept its responsibility and atone for its mistakes. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should publicly acknowledge that we made a mistake. The deaths of children resulted from systemic failure and negligence; this is not merely an accident but institutional murder. A murder case should be filed against the government as well. Merely announcing compensation will not alleviate the grief of the deceased children’s parents.”
The government has formed SITs in over 80 cases. However, it remains unclear how many individuals have been punished so far. Rajput claimed that the SIT is merely a method to protect criminals. He noted that there had been previous incidents involving two buildings, yet no action has been taken.
On the appointment of Arup Roy as the new TMC chairman in place of Mamata Banerjee, Rajput stated, “This has happened at the behest of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP aims to murder democracy. They have previously bought legislators and are now attempting to hijack the entire party.”
In response to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s statement about the success of ‘Operation Tiger’, Rajput remarked, “What could be more shameless? You are luring MPs using the ED, CBI, and Maharashtra police, or enticing them with money. These are individuals who won elections under someone else’s symbol. They were elected with the support of Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) but later switched sides due to BJP’s temptations.”
