Bhawanipatna, February 22: A devastating road accident occurred in Jharsuguda district, claiming the lives of five policemen and leaving three others seriously injured. The incident took place early Sunday morning in front of the Sadar police station.
The deceased officers have been identified as Kashiram Bhoi (APRO), Niranjan Kujur (Drill Sub-Inspector), Debadatta Sa (APRO), Lingaraj Dhurua (APRO Havildar), and Bhaktabandhu Mirdha (Home Guard).
Among the injured are Dubaraj Mirig (APRO), Akash Nayak (APRO), and Rajiv Bharasagar (Sergeant), who are currently receiving treatment at the Jharsuguda district headquarters hospital.
The accident occurred when a speeding trailer truck, loaded with iron rods, collided head-on with a Bolero vehicle transporting the policemen. A local resident reported, “A horrific accident happened today on National Highway 49 in front of the Jharsuguda Sadar police station, resulting in the death of five policemen returning to duty after attending a wedding. Their families are in shock after losing their breadwinners.”
In light of this tragedy, local residents have raised concerns about the government’s and NHAI officials’ negligence regarding their long-standing demand to expand the highway from two lanes to four.
A resident stated, “Thousands of light and heavy vehicles pass through this road daily, heading to Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mumbai, Nagpur, and other locations. We have been requesting the expansion for over two decades. However, all efforts have remained on paper, and no practical steps have been taken to upgrade this road. Accidents occur regularly here. The government must address this issue immediately.”
Following the accident, police have initiated an investigation, detained the driver, and seized the truck involved in the incident.
