Mumbai, May 18: A devastating accident occurred on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway near Dhaniwari village in the Dahanu tehsil of Palghar district. A tempo overturned after colliding with a container, resulting in the deaths of 14 individuals and leaving over 20 others severely injured. Initial reports indicate that the accident was caused by the negligence of the tempo driver.
According to preliminary information, a family traveling from Bapugaon to attend a Sakharpuda ceremony was involved in the incident. The tempo driver attempted to take a wrong turn to save approximately one kilometer of distance. During this maneuver, a speeding container, traveling from Gujarat to Mumbai, first struck a motorcyclist before overturning onto the tempo.
The collision resulted in 14 fatalities at the scene, while more than 20 people sustained serious injuries. The injured are currently receiving treatment at Kasa Sub-District Hospital and Vedanta Hospital located in Dhundalwadi. Reports indicate that there were between 30 to 40 passengers in the tempo at the time of the accident.
Upon receiving news of the incident, Palghar MLA Rajendra Gavit and Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation. They assured that all possible medical assistance would be provided to the injured.
Superintendent Yatish Deshmukh stated that, at first glance, the accident appears to be the result of the tempo driver’s error. However, the true cause of the accident will only be determined after a thorough investigation.
MLA Rajendra Gavit highlighted that ongoing construction work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway has led to numerous accidents due to its incomplete state. He plans to discuss this issue with the Chief Minister and the concerned Minister to expedite the completion of the work.
He also mentioned, “I have repeatedly requested the establishment of a trauma care center, but this facility has yet to be operational. The lack of healthcare facilities makes it challenging to save the lives of those injured in accidents on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway.”
