Wellington, December 10: New Zealand Test captain Tom Latham has expressed optimism that the proposed ‘New Zealand20’ league could significantly enhance the standard of cricket in the country. He said the league would offer young cricketers better opportunities to showcase their talent.
Speaking ahead of the second Test against West Indies in Wellington, Latham said, “The initiative of the ‘New Zealand20’ league is excellent. I think we are one of the only Test-playing nations without a franchise competition. If the league starts, it will benefit New Zealand cricket. Our cricketing standard is already good, but the league will bring international players here, raising the level further.”
Latham added, “I hope the league begins soon. I want it to happen. Franchise cricket has allowed players from around the world to mix and learn from each other. Even after retiring from international cricket, many players continue to participate in franchise leagues. Learning from such players will be very beneficial not only for current New Zealand cricketers but also for the young generation coming up.”
He further said, “I would like to see a competition here where we can utilise all our talents to promote cricket in New Zealand. I believe this is a great opportunity to do so.”
Following the global success of league cricket, New Zealand is planning to launch a T20 league in January 2027 for men, with a women’s league to follow later the same year. Former captain and coach Stephen Fleming has played a key role in bringing this initiative forward. The plan is yet to receive approval from New Zealand Cricket. If launched, the ‘New Zealand20’ league will replace the existing domestic T20 tournament, Super Smash.
