Kolkata, May 4: Dilip Mandal of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has secured victory in the Bishnupur (SC) Assembly seat. He defeated BJP candidate Abhijit Sardar by a margin of 36,925 votes, receiving a total of 132,647 votes.
The contest was closely watched as Mandal faced off against Sardar. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Mandal garnered 136,509 votes, while his opponent, Tanmay Ghosh from the BJP, received 89,689 votes.
The Bishnupur (SC) seat, located in the South 24 Parganas district, is reserved for Scheduled Castes. This constituency has a complex history, having been established in 1951 as a two-seat constituency. It was divided into Bishnupur West and Bishnupur East after the elections of 1952 and 1957. In 2011, these two seats were merged to form a single Bishnupur Assembly seat, which was then reserved for SC candidates. It is one of the seven Lok Sabha seats in the Diamond Harbour constituency.
Bishnupur has been a stronghold for the TMC, with Dilip Mandal winning elections in 2011, 2016, and 2021.
According to the draft electoral roll following the 2025 SIR, there were 272,720 voters in the Bishnupur constituency, with 18,491 names removed from the 2024 roll. The total registered voters in Bishnupur stood at 291,211, indicating a previous increase in voter registration.
Bishnupur is situated in the northern part of South 24 Parganas, within the flat alluvial plains of the Ganges Delta, on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River.
With 18,491 names removed from the voter list, any close contest in future elections could become even more intriguing. The BJP will need to strengthen its position to compete effectively for this seat.
