New Delhi, May 5: In the West Bengal Assembly elections, TMC leader and minister Biplab Mitra has emerged victorious from the Harirampur constituency. He faced a strong challenge from BJP candidate Debabrata Majumdar.
Biplab Mitra received 93,098 votes, while Debabrata Majumdar garnered 91,112 votes. The margin of victory was a mere 1,986 votes. The Congress candidate finished third, managing only 8,462 votes.
The Harirampur Assembly seat is considered a significant constituency in the South Dinajpur district. It falls under the Balurghat Lok Sabha area and was created following the 2011 delimitation, with elections first held in that year. The 2026 Assembly elections witnessed a fierce contest between the BJP and TMC.
Several prominent candidates contested in the 2026 elections for the Harirampur seat. The Trinamool Congress fielded its senior leader and minister Biplab Mitra, while the BJP nominated Debabrata Majumdar. CPI(M) put forward Gautam Goswami, and Congress backed Subhashish Pal (Sona). Additionally, there were several other candidates in the fray.
Historically, the Harirampur seat has seen direct competition between the TMC and BJP. Biplab Mitra won in 2011, while CPI(M)’s Rafiqul Islam took the seat in 2016. The TMC made a comeback in 2021, re-electing Biplab Mitra.
