Kolkata, May 20: Amid rising political tensions and post-election violence in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) staged a protest at the assembly premises on Wednesday. TMC legislators gathered in front of the statue of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in Kolkata, led by the Leader of the Opposition, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay.
During the protest, TMC leader Kunal Ghosh made serious allegations against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the administration regarding the ongoing ‘post-poll violence’ in the state. He stated that many party workers have been forced to live away from their homes, which have been demolished.
Ghosh accused the authorities of targeting party workers by reviving old cases. He claimed, “Cases from five years ago are being reopened, even involving individuals who were not previously named, and they are now being arrested.”
He further alleged that the poor are being displaced without any steps being taken for their rehabilitation or alternative arrangements. Ghosh questioned, “Where will those whose homes are being demolished go now?”
He also accused the central government of adopting a ‘double standard’ and criticized the rising prices of petrol, diesel, domestic gas, commercial gas, and auto LPG.
Ghosh emphasized that inflation is continuously rising, directly impacting the common people. In response to these issues, TMC legislators held a sit-in protest within the assembly premises.
This demonstration by the TMC comes at a time when the atmosphere in the state is increasingly charged with post-election violence, arrests, and political accusations.
