Kolkata, May 12: TMC legislator Madan Mitra has been admitted to a hospital in South Kolkata due to a urinary-related issue. Hospital sources report that his condition is currently stable, and the medications are positively affecting his health.
He was admitted on Monday evening and is under medical supervision. Close associates of the legislator have mentioned that he has been experiencing mental stress following the party’s defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
According to his family, if everything goes well, Mitra may be discharged from the hospital in the coming days. He contested the recent assembly elections from his Kamardaha constituency. Despite the party’s overall loss in the state, Mitra successfully secured victory in his area. His sudden illness has raised concerns among his supporters.
During the election campaign, Madan Mitra was often in the spotlight, known for singing and wearing colorful attire while promoting his candidacy. He even sold ‘jhalmuri’ as part of his campaign efforts.
Mitra first won the Kamardaha seat in 2011 when the TMC ended the 34-year rule of the Left Front government. In 2014, he was arrested in connection with the Saradha chit fund case and spent approximately 21 months in jail before being granted bail in September 2016.
He contested the 2016 elections from Kamardaha but faced defeat. The party fielded him again in the Bhatarpada by-election in 2019, where he also lost. However, he bounced back in the 2021 assembly elections, winning once more from Kamardaha, and has now triumphed again in 2026.
