Kolkata, May 19: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is experiencing internal strife as demands for the immediate expulsion of Jahangir Khan have emerged during a recent meeting of newly elected legislators. This meeting was chaired by former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
TMC General Secretary and Lok Sabha MP Abhishek Banerjee was also present at the gathering. Khan, who is the TMC candidate from the Falta assembly seat, announced during a press conference on Tuesday morning that he would withdraw from the re-election scheduled for May 21. This announcement intensified calls for his removal from the party.
During the press conference, Jahangir Khan expressed gratitude to the new Chief Minister, Suvendu Adhikari, for announcing a special package for Falta. However, he did not clarify whether his decision to withdraw from the election was made under the direction of party leadership or Abhishek Banerjee.
The TMC has stated that Khan’s decision is personal and not a directive from the party. According to sources present at the meeting, the demand for Khan’s immediate expulsion was primarily raised by three legislators: Kunal Ghosh from Beliaghata, Sandipan Saha from Entally, and Ritabrata Banerjee from Uluberia (East) in Howrah district.
These legislators also called for a more open environment to discuss various issues within the party, particularly internal grievances from the legislators. In the recently concluded West Bengal assembly elections, the TMC secured 80 seats. All 80 legislators were invited to the meeting, but 15 were absent.
Political analysts believe this is the first significant indication of rising discontent among legislators against the party leadership. Following a disappointing performance in the assembly elections, several TMC leaders have openly criticized the party leadership, and this dissatisfaction is now becoming evident among newly elected legislators as well.
