Kolkata, May 7: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) strongly condemned the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, and demanded a CBI investigation under court supervision. Rath was shot dead late Wednesday night while returning home from a party event in the Madhyagram area of North 24 Parganas district.
He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head, chest, and abdomen. He was rushed to Vivasity Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
Another individual, Budhadev Bera, who was in the same vehicle as Rath, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He is currently undergoing treatment at Vivasity Hospital, and his condition remains critical.
In response to the incident, TMC issued a statement on the social media platform X, condemning the violence and calling for strict action against the perpetrators.
The party stated, “We strongly condemn the brutal murder of Chandranath Rath in Madhyagram. We also denounce the alleged post-election violence supported by the BJP, which has resulted in the deaths of three TMC workers in the last three days, despite the enforcement of the code of conduct.”
TMC has demanded a high-level investigation into the matter.
The statement continued, “We demand the strictest action in this case, including a CBI investigation under court supervision, to identify the culprits and ensure they are punished swiftly. There is no place for violence and political murders in a democracy, and the guilty must be held accountable promptly.”
TMC Lok Sabha MP Sayoni Ghosh also expressed concern over the incident and called for stringent action against those involved in the violence.
Ghosh wrote on X, “The incident involving Chandranath Rath is extremely concerning. It is our collective responsibility to maintain law and order in the state and ensure the safety of every individual, transcending party, politics, and ideological differences.”
She added, “No one should lose their life in this manner. I urge the police and administration to take strict measures and actions against those responsible for every violent incident that has occurred in recent days.”
Meanwhile, Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya claimed that Rath’s murder is a result of a conspiracy by the TMC leadership, frustrated by their recent defeat in the West Bengal elections.
Bhattacharya stated, “It is the responsibility of the Election Commission to maintain peace and law and order during the time between the election results and the formation of the new cabinet. TMC-backed goons have started violence in various parts of the state, posing as BJP workers. Now, they have attempted to send a message by murdering the personal assistant of the Leader of the Opposition. I am not surprised, as this is the culture of the TMC.”
