Kolkata, May 4: The results for the Baruipur West Assembly seat in South 24 Parganas district have been announced. In a thrilling contest, TMC candidate Biman Banerjee has emerged victorious, defeating BJP candidate Bishwajit Pal. Banerjee secured a total of 104,781 votes, while his closest rival, Bishwajit, received 86,919 votes. The victory margin stands at 17,862 votes.
Baruipur West is a general assembly constituency in the South 24 Parganas district, falling under the Jadavpur Lok Sabha constituency. This seat was formed in its current shape after the 2008 delimitation, which divided the old Baruipur area into western and eastern parts. The constituency includes the Baruipur municipality and ten gram panchayats from the Baruipur block.
Historically, this seat has been a stronghold for the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In 2021, Baruipur West recorded an impressive 83% voter turnout, with TMC’s Biman Banerjee defeating BJP’s Debopam Chattopadhyay by a margin of 29%. In 2016, the turnout was 86%, where Banerjee again triumphed over CPM’s Safiuddin Khan by a margin of 20%.
The BJP’s vote share has been steadily increasing in this constituency. It rose from a few thousand votes in 2011 to nearly 59,000 votes in 2021. Despite this growth, TMC has maintained its lead. In the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, TMC is expected to retain its advantage, winning by an even larger margin than before.
Regarding the voter demographics, approximately one-third of the voters are Muslim, while the Scheduled Caste representation is nearly equal. Historically, the Baruipur area has been significant, once serving as a major hub for the Kolkata-East Bengal Railway and known for indigo cultivation during the colonial era. Located in the Ganges Delta, this region is characterized by its flat and low-lying land, with several small rivers, including the Adi Ganga, which were once vital for water transport.
