Kolkata, May 9: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has officially announced its leadership positions in the West Bengal Assembly. This announcement was made on Saturday, marking a significant step for the party.
Senior leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay has been appointed as the Leader of the Opposition in the 18th West Bengal Assembly. He was elected from the Ballygunge constituency in South Kolkata.
Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s general secretary and Lok Sabha MP, released a statement on Saturday evening confirming Chattopadhyay’s appointment.
Notably, Suvendu Adhikari serves as the Leader of the House in the Assembly, having taken the oath as West Bengal’s ninth Chief Minister earlier that morning. He is the first Chief Minister from the BJP-led government since independence.
Chattopadhyay previously held the positions of Agriculture Minister and Parliamentary Affairs Minister in the last TMC government led by Mamata Banerjee from 2021 to 2026. He has also served as the state’s Power Minister.
In a statement from the party, two female legislators have been appointed as Deputy Leaders of the Opposition. The first is Naina Bandopadhyay, an actress-turned-politician, representing the Chowringhee constituency in North Kolkata. She is also the wife of senior TMC Lok Sabha MP Sudip Bandopadhyay.
The second Deputy Leader of the Opposition is Asima Patra, who represents the Dhanekhali constituency in Hooghly district.
Additionally, Firhad Hakim has been appointed as the Chief Whip of the TMC legislative party in the Assembly. Known as ‘Bobby’, Hakim is currently the Mayor of Kolkata and has served as the Minister for Urban Development and Municipal Affairs in all three terms of the TMC government from 2011 to 2026.
