Kolkata, April 25: Abhishek Banerjee, the General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has made a bold claim following the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections. He stated that the TMC has surpassed the 100-seat mark.
During an election rally in Basirhat, North 24 Parganas on Saturday, Banerjee expressed confidence that after the second and final phase of voting on April 29, the TMC would exceed 200 seats.
He noted that while he typically refrains from making predictions, when he does, they tend to come true. Banerjee recalled making similar claims in 2021 and 2024, asserting that the TMC has already crossed the 100-seat threshold in the recent voting.
Regarding the remaining votes for the second phase, Banerjee asserted that the TMC would surpass 200 seats on the 29th, adding that he is uncertain where the final count will land.
Political analysts suggest that most of the seats in South Bengal, considered a TMC stronghold, will be available for voting on April 29.
According to the election schedule, this year’s voting is taking place in two phases. The first phase saw voting on April 23 for 152 seats, while the remaining 142 seats will be voted on April 29.
Banerjee estimates that the TMC has secured over 100 seats from the first phase of 152. In a bold move, he challenged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to remain in Bengal until the counting day on May 4.
He criticized leaders from Delhi who made grand claims but were met with a strong response from the public. Banerjee accused them of attempting to intimidate voters for their support, asserting that the people of Bengal are not afraid.
He also reminded BJP leaders of the intense heat in the state and advised them to stay hydrated.
