Chennai, May 18: TKS Elangovan, spokesperson for the DMK, asserted on Monday that the ongoing rift within the AIADMK stems from Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s fear of losing his leadership position if senior leaders are reinstated in the party.
This statement emerged as the internal crisis within the AIADMK deepened, with tensions spreading across various district units in Tamil Nadu, prompting police intervention in several locations.
The escalating conflict between supporters of AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and a rival faction led by former ministers SP Velumani and CV Shanmugam has reportedly turned into a battle for control over the party’s organization. In many districts, party offices have been locked down and placed under police protection amid rising tensions.
Meanwhile, EPS has accused the rebel faction of prioritizing their personal ambitions for ministerial positions over the party’s unity and stability.
In response to these developments, Elangovan stated that this conflict has been ongoing for some time. He noted that Palaniswami is reluctant to bring back leaders who were once senior members of the AIADMK, fearing that their return could weaken his own position. This situation highlights Palaniswami’s leadership vulnerabilities, which have led to the current divisions.
Elangovan also commented on actor Rajinikanth congratulating actor-turned-politician Vijay following the assembly election results. Rajinikanth had extended his wishes to Vijay on X, dismissing rumors that he was envious of Vijay’s political success. He clarified that his recent meeting with former Chief Minister MK Stalin was entirely personal, emphasizing that their friendship spans nearly four decades and transcends political ties.
Rajinikanth firmly rejected speculation that the meeting aimed to prevent Vijay from becoming Chief Minister.
Addressing this issue, Elangovan questioned what was wrong with Rajinikanth praising Stalin, acknowledging their close friendship. He remarked that when someone from the film industry enters politics, Rajinikanth would naturally congratulate them.
Elangovan also responded to criticisms from actor Vishal and others regarding Chief Minister Vijay appointing Rajmohan as the Minister for the Film Industry. He argued that someone knowledgeable about the film industry should hold the position to understand its dynamics and improve it, suggesting that this could be the reason behind the criticism.
