Bangkok, May 17: India’s top men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, faced defeat in the final of the Thailand Open. The Indian duo lost to Indonesia’s Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin with scores of 21-12, 25-23.
Satwik and Chirag had to settle for the silver medal. In the first game, they struggled to find their rhythm, allowing the Indonesian pair to take the lead and win 21-12. The Indian duo made a strong comeback in the second game, pushing it to the limit. Despite saving five championship points, they ultimately lost 25-23.
After the exits of PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen, much was expected from Satwik and Chirag in the final. They had delivered impressive performances throughout the tournament, reaching the final with ease. However, they were unable to maintain their momentum in the title match, falling short of their dream of winning their first final of 2026.
Earlier, Satwik and Chirag secured their spot in the final by defeating Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in an exhilarating semifinal. They won that match with scores of 19-21, 22-20, 21-16, which lasted for one hour and 22 minutes.
This was the third time Satwik and Chirag reached the finals of the Thailand Open. They had previously won the title in 2019 and 2024. Unfortunately, their quest for a third title was not fulfilled this time. PV Sindhu exited the tournament in the quarterfinals, losing to Yamaguchi with scores of 21-19, 18-21, 15-21. Lakshya Sen also faced defeat in the quarterfinals against Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, losing in straight sets 19-21, 16-21.
