Sydney, February 16: Navid Akram, the terrorist responsible for the attack on Jewish individuals at Bondi Beach in Sydney on December 14, made his first court appearance on Monday.

Akram appeared via video link in Australia‘s Supermax Court. This marked his first public hearing following one of the largest mass shootings in the country in nearly three decades.

According to the Xinhua News Agency, police have charged the 24-year-old Akram with a total of 59 counts, including 15 counts of murder, intent to injure 40 individuals, and one count of terrorism.

Both Akram and his father, Sajid, are accused of carrying out the attack during a Hanukkah celebration in December. The father was killed by police gunfire during the incident.

During the court session, which lasted approximately five minutes, Akram appeared via video link from jail. The court also discussed the timeline of the evidence presented.

Local media reported that Akram remained mostly silent during the hearing, only speaking when directly addressed by the presiding judge.

His lawyer, Ben Archbold, later stated that it was too early to determine what defense his client would present.

The next hearing in this case is scheduled for April.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Mike Burgess, the Director-General of the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), informed the Senate that the attackers had meticulously planned the incident and took extensive precautions to conceal their actions.

He stated, “It appears that the alleged terrorists exercised considerable caution to hide their plot. In simple terms, they went dark to evade detection.”

This attack targeted the Jewish festival of Hanukkah and is considered the deadliest terrorist act on Australian soil in the last 30 years since 1996.
