
Mumbai, April 23: Telecom operators such as Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio have quietly implemented a series of tariff hikes recently. These adjustments occur every few weeks or months as companies seek to enhance their service margins. Recently, Airtel discontinued its Rs 799 and Rs 859 plans, replacing them with a new Rs 899 option. While this change may seem minor, it is significant for users to take note of.
Reliance Jio has also altered the validity of its Rs 195 data voucher. The new standalone validity is now 30 days, reduced from the previous 90 days. Although this plan still includes data and OTT (over-the-top) benefits, the reduction in validity represents a notable increase in the cost of usage.
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has similarly been known for its subtle tariff hikes. The state-run operator does not directly raise prices; instead, it reduces the service validity associated with its plans. These incremental hikes contribute to a marginal improvement in revenue and profit margins for the company.
Looking ahead, industry experts anticipate that a more significant round of hikes is imminent. It has been nearly two years since the last price increase, and historical trends suggest that telecom companies typically adjust their prices every two years.
