TAYPA stages sit-in protest demanding ST status

New Delhi, March 15 : The Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam (TAYPA) on Tuesday staged a sit-in protest here, demanding the Centre to provide constitutional safeguard to the Tai Ahom comm ty by granting it the Schedule Tribe (ST) status. Scores of TAYPA activists, led by its president Bijoy Rajkonwar, sat at the Jantar Mantar, holding placards and banners regarding their demands. “We have come here to raise our long-pending demand of granting ST status to the Tai Ahom comm ty. Our legitimate demand should be fulfilled,” Rajkonwar told . He also expressed disappointment over the Assam government’s approach on the issue. “We staged sit-in for several times in Assam. Government also held discussions with us. They always said we are sending it to the Centre. But no progress in this regard so far,” the TAYPA president said. Attacking the ruling dispensation, Rajkonwar said, “Government (Assam) has made it a political agenda. Only before elections they discuss the issue but after retaining the power they forget about it.” He also threatened that if their demand was not fulfilled, then they will intensify their protest.
