Tata Trusts Postpone Board Meeting Amid Legal Challenges

Mumbai, May 8: Tata Sons’ primary shareholders, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust (SDTT) and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust (SRTT), have postponed their board meeting until May 16. This delay is attributed to governance and legal challenges, according to sources.

Originally scheduled for today, the meeting aimed to review the representation of the trusts on the Tata Sons board, including a potential review of certain appointed directors.

Sources indicate that some trustees, who were already present for the scheduled meeting, were informed shortly before its start that the discussion had been canceled.

The meeting was initially set for May 12 but was later postponed.

Potential topics for discussion included recent comments made by SDTT Vice Chairman Vijay Singh and Venu Srinivasan regarding the possibility of listing Tata Sons. These remarks have reportedly sparked a comprehensive internal evaluation within the trusts about whether the appointed board members agree with the broader institutional perspective of maintaining the holding company as privately owned.

Most members of the trusts favor keeping Tata Sons as an unlisted entity, and despite some differences, Chairman Noel Tata also supports this stance.

Although Vijay Singh was not reappointed to the Tata Sons board last year, any potential review concerning Venu Srinivasan is likely to draw attention due to his prominence in Indian companies and his ongoing role within the trusts.

The debate over the potential listing of Tata Sons has been a sensitive issue within the Tata Group for several years, with varying opinions emerging from the trusts’ leadership over time.

The SDTT board includes Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, Darius Khambata, Neville N. Tata, and Bhatt. The SRTT board comprises Noel Tata, Venu Srinivasan, Vijay Singh, Jimmy Tata, Jahangir H.C. Jahangir, and Khambata.
