New Delhi, May 1: The Indian automobile sector has kicked off the fiscal year 2027 on a strong note. In April 2026, Tata Motors achieved remarkable success in the passenger vehicle segment, surpassing Mahindra & Mahindra.
Tata Motors recorded a year-on-year sales increase of 31.1%, selling a total of 59,701 units this month. Domestic sales played a significant role in this growth, rising by 30.5% to nearly 59,000 units. Exports also more than doubled, albeit from a lower base.
The company’s electric vehicle (EV) segment contributed significantly, with sales soaring by 72.1% to reach 9,150 units. This impressive performance indicates a shift in consumer preference towards safer, technology-equipped vehicles, alongside a rapid adoption of electric vehicles.
Tata Motors is benefiting from an early lead in the electric vehicle sector, supported by new models and improved charging infrastructure.
In the commercial vehicle segment, Tata Motors also performed well, with total sales increasing by 28% to 34,833 units. This included a notable 40.2% rise in sales of small commercial vehicles and pickups. Demand for heavy trucks and passenger carriers remained stable, reflecting ongoing economic activity and strong demand in the logistics sector.
Meanwhile, Mahindra & Mahindra reported total sales of 94,627 vehicles, marking a year-on-year growth of 14%. Domestic passenger vehicle sales increased by 8%, indicating sustained demand in their SUV segment, although the growth was slower compared to Tata Motors.
Mahindra’s tractor business achieved significant success, with sales rising by 21% to 48,411 units. The company also recorded a robust 30% increase in tractor exports.
Nalinikant Gollagunta, CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra’s automotive division, stated that April marked a positive start to fiscal year 2027, with SUV sales reaching 56,331 units, an 8% increase, while total vehicle sales stood at 94,627 units, up 14% from the previous year.
