Mirpur, April 8: Tamim Iqbal, the newly appointed president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), held his first official meeting with the board’s ad-hoc executive committee at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday. In a media briefing following the meeting, Iqbal emphasized the necessity of restoring the board’s credibility.
Iqbal stated, “I am sure you all understand that we must collectively address the damage done to cricket’s reputation over the past year and a half.”
He highlighted the shared responsibility of reigniting pride in Bangladesh cricket. “Whether we perform well or not, criticism will follow, but no one wants cricket to be in its worst phase. We always want cricket to be a source of pride. Those who work or have worked in the BCB should take pride in their association. I am uncertain how to view the events of the past year and a half, but we must regain our former glory.”
Iqbal stressed the importance of respecting players and all stakeholders, stating, “This will be our primary task. We will not just talk; we will change for the better. We will make mistakes, and our team may too, but we will learn from them and keep trying. That is our main goal.”
The National Sports Council has tasked the ad-hoc committee with conducting elections within 90 days. Iqbal assured that they would fulfill this responsibility with utmost sincerity. “We have been entrusted with the duty of conducting a free and fair election within three months. We will execute this task as quickly and honestly as possible.”
However, Iqbal did not comment on whether he would participate in the elections himself.
He emphasized the importance of inclusivity during the electoral process, noting that it would be a board election involving current board members, players, and organizers—all should participate. “Our aim is to create an environment where everyone can take part in the elections.”
In addition to overseeing the elections, the committee will manage daily operations.
Iqbal remarked, “We will obviously pay attention to daily activities. You know, there are also World Cup issues. We will address everything that is necessary.”
Ad-hoc member Tanzil Chowdhury mentioned that Iqbal will represent Bangladesh in upcoming ICC meetings.
