Tamil Nadu Power Board Faces ₹2.5 Lakh Crore Debt, Minister Blames Previous DMK Government

Chennai, May 20: Tamil Nadu’s power sector is grappling with a significant financial crisis, with the state electricity board reportedly burdened by a debt of approximately ₹2.5 lakh crore. Minister Nirmal Kumar has leveled serious accusations against the previous DMK government, claiming that irregularities and legal violations during its tenure have led to the current predicament.

Minister Nirmal Kumar stated that numerous irregularities and discrepancies linked to the previous administration have emerged, many of which are now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He emphasized that the current TVK government is committed to ensuring that such a situation does not arise again in the future.

He noted that the electricity board, which serves millions of consumers, has been severely impacted by years of administrative failures and financial mismanagement. According to the minister, the institution has gradually weakened due to the alleged irregularities during the previous government.

Nirmal Kumar remarked, “The electricity board currently carries a debt of millions of crores. The situation has reached a point where a complete restructuring of the organization has become unavoidable.”

He mentioned that the government is considering all possible options to restore the electricity board to a financially stable and efficient entity, aiming to provide better services to the public.

The minister claimed that there are ample opportunities and structural arrangements available to reorganize the board and improve its financial condition. The government’s goal is not only to reduce the debt burden but also to modernize the operations of the electricity board and ensure its long-term stability.

He assured that the government is taking comprehensive steps to revive the electricity board and strengthen its functioning.

Emphasizing the seriousness of the situation, Nirmal Kumar stated that the current government is diligently working to revitalize the power sector and prevent a recurrence of the alleged mistakes made by the previous administration. He reassured that the government is committed to providing uninterrupted and improved electricity services to the consumers of Tamil Nadu.
