Tamil Nadu Government Revokes Appointment of Astrologer as OSD

Chennai, May 13: The newly formed ‘Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK) government faced significant embarrassment when Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay revoked the appointment of his personal astrologer, Ricky Radhan Pandit Vetrivel, as the Chief Minister’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD) on Wednesday. This decision came immediately after the government secured a confidence vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

The revocation followed intense criticism from opposition parties, social media users, and even allies within the ruling coalition. Many questioned the rationale behind appointing an astrologer to a government position funded by taxpayers.

Ricky Radhan Pandit Vetrivel had been appointed as OSD-Political through an official government order issued on Tuesday. Known as a close confidant of Vijay, Vetrivel played an active role in the TVK’s campaign during the assembly elections and served as one of the party’s spokespersons. He had previously garnered attention by predicting a “tsunami-like victory” for Vijay before the election results.

The controversy erupted within the Tamil Nadu Assembly during discussions on the confidence motion presented by Chief Minister Vijay. Several legislators openly criticized the appointment, putting the government under pressure just hours after taking office.

Vidhuthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) MLA Vanni Arasu stated that the government should promote scientific thinking rather than astrology and superstition. DMK leader Premalatha Vijayakant also condemned the decision, arguing that if Ricky Radhan Pandit was merely a personal advisor to the Chief Minister, he should continue in that capacity without an official government role. She further questioned the message such an appointment sends to the educated youth and society.

The controversy quickly spread beyond the Assembly. Congress MP and former IAS officer Shashikanth Senthil criticized the appointment on social media, questioning the need for an astrologer in the OSD position. CPI(M) state secretary P. Shanmugam and CPI leader M. Veerapandian also condemned the move, stating it contradicts constitutional values, secular governance, and scientific thought.

Ricky Radhan Pandit’s official website claims he had close ties with former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and provided advice on astrology, electoral strategies, legal matters, and political decisions during crucial phases of her political career.

Facing mounting criticism from various quarters, the TVK government ultimately withdrew the appointment order on Wednesday.
