Chennai, May 4: As the counting of votes for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections commences, stringent security measures are in place at major counting centers in Chennai. The counting of postal ballots began at 8 AM, followed by the counting of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) starting at 8:30 AM. This process is being conducted under the vigilant supervision of election officials, observers, and security personnel.
One of the main counting centers is Loyola College, where a three-tier security arrangement has been established. Numerous police officers are stationed at the entrances, and barricades have been set up outside the campus. Every vehicle entering the premises undergoes thorough checks.
Officials have indicated that similar extensive security measures are implemented at other key counting centers, including Queen Mary College and Anna University, where EVMs are securely stored after voting.
The Election Commission of India reiterated its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of transparency, security, and efficiency during the counting process.
Voting took place on April 23 for all 234 seats, with a turnout of 4.88 crore out of 5.73 crore eligible voters, resulting in an impressive 85.10% voter participation. A total of 4,023 candidates are contesting, and the counting is taking place under tight security across 62 centers.
The main contest in Tamil Nadu is between the DMK, led by MK Stalin, and the AIADMK, headed by Edappadi K. Palaniswami. The AIADMK is a partner of the BJP in the NDA.
However, several regional parties have also entered the fray, with their fates to be decided after the counting on Monday. This includes the party of actor-turned-politician Vijay, the Tamilga Vetri Katchi (TVK), adding to the competitive landscape in the state.
