Chennai, May 12: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S. Joseph Vijay presented a golden shawl and a bouquet to JCD Prabhakar, who has assumed the role of Assembly Speaker, during a ceremony held in the Speaker’s chamber at the Secretariat.
JCD Prabhakar was unanimously elected as the Assembly Speaker by the legislators of Tamil Nadu. Ravi Shankar, the MLA from Thuraiyur constituency, was also unanimously chosen as the Deputy Speaker. The TVK government is required to prove its majority in the Assembly on May 13.
A meeting was convened in the Assembly on Tuesday to elect the Speaker. During this session, the acting Speaker, M.V. Karuppaiya, announced that Chief Minister C. Joseph proposed JCD Prabhakar’s name, leading to his uncontested election. Karuppaiya also declared the end of his tenure as acting Speaker.
On Tuesday, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay emphasized the importance of democratic traditions in the Tamil Nadu Assembly as JCD Prabhakar was elected unopposed as Speaker.
While addressing the Assembly, Vijay recalled how Speakers in England during the monarchy played a crucial role in communicating parliamentary decisions to the king, often at great personal risk.
Vijay stated, “It was the Speaker’s responsibility to inform the king if any proposal was rejected by Parliament. In those days, kings had the authority to impose the death penalty, and Speakers sometimes faced severe penalties for conveying Parliament’s stance.”
He also referenced the old parliamentary tradition where newly elected Speakers hesitated to take their seat, being escorted to the chair by leaders from both the ruling and opposition parties.
The Chief Minister remarked, “That tradition continues today as a symbol of democratic values.”
Vijay asserted that the Tamil Nadu Assembly should function as the heart of democracy, citing former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln’s famous definition of democracy as “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
