Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Presents Confidence Motion Amidst Political Support

Chennai, May 13: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay presented a confidence motion in the state assembly on Wednesday. Following its introduction, members from the Congress party and CPI, CPI (M) formally expressed their support for Vijay’s government.

Members of the ‘Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi’ (VCK) also backed the confidence motion, indicating strong support from the coalition partners for the new government.

A faction of rebel AIADMK legislators, led by senior leaders C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani, also pledged their support during the confidence vote. This move has intensified the internal crisis within the AIADMK party, which has been grappling with leadership disputes since its defeat in the recent assembly elections.

This confidence vote is significant as the recently concluded assembly elections saw the TVK emerge as the largest party, yet it fell short of a majority in the 234-member assembly. Subsequently, the party formed a government with the backing of Congress, CPI, and CPI (M).

During the debate on the confidence motion, VCK legislator Vanni Arasu raised several policy-level demands. He urged the new government to adopt progressive reforms and maintain a welfare-oriented governance system. Addressing the assembly, Arasu called for strict legislation against superstitious practices, including astrology.

He argued that promoting scientific thinking and rational ideas should be prioritized across society. His remarks drew attention as this issue has long been a crucial part of Tamil Nadu’s rationalist political discourse.

The VCK legislator also urged the government to take immediate diplomatic and administrative steps to address the recurring issue of Tamil Nadu fishermen’s arrests. These arrests occur when fishermen are caught by the Sri Lankan Navy while fishing near the ‘International Maritime Boundary Line.’

He emphasized that ensuring the livelihood and safety of fishermen in coastal districts should be a top priority for the government. Additionally, Arasu appealed to the Vijay government to continue essential welfare schemes initiated by the previous DMK administration, including the ‘Breakfast Scheme’ for school students.

The assembly proceedings continued amidst intense political activity, with the ruling coalition appearing to be in a strong position to secure the necessary numbers to win the confidence vote.
