Chennai, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : The Dharapuram by-election in Tamil Nadu has emerged as a critical test for the ruling Tamil Nadu Vanniyar Katchi (TVK) party. With five candidates in the fray and shifting alliances, the party faces challenges in solidifying its position in the assembly.
This by-election, taking place in Tiruppur district, is particularly significant. A victory for the TVK in both Dharapuram and Madurantakam could enhance the government’s standing in the assembly.
The TVK has fielded P. Satyabhama for this seat. She is up against DMK’s Sukanya, AIADMK’s K. Bhanumathi, CPI’s P. Lakshmanan, and Naam Tamilar Katchi’s Karthika.
Notably, P. Satyabhama previously won this seat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections on an AIADMK ticket. However, she resigned from her position shortly after and joined the TVK.
In the previous assembly elections, Dharapuram saw a voter turnout of 88.84%. Satyabhama secured 81,100 votes, defeating DMK candidate P. Indrani, who received 64,373 votes, marking a victory margin of 16,727 votes. TVK’s S. Gouri Chitra came in third with 46,438 votes, which accounted for 23.23% of the total. These figures highlight the ruling party’s efforts to bolster its support.
Historically, Dharapuram’s electoral landscape offers no guarantees for candidates. Since 1952, DMK and AIADMK have won six times each, with Congress securing victories three times and PMK once. Notably, no party has won this seat consecutively since AIADMK’s third win in 1984.
The changing coalition dynamics also present challenges for the DMK. The party must maintain the support of its broad coalition while countering both the TVK and AIADMK.
Satyabhama’s decision to resign immediately after her win has sparked some discontent. Whether this dissatisfaction will translate into a significant electoral loss remains uncertain.
