Chennai, May 11: The first meeting of Tamil Nadu’s 17th Assembly will commence on Monday morning, where all newly elected legislators will take their oaths as members of the Assembly.
Elections were held across all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu, resulting in a significant political shift. C. Joseph Vijay, a leader of the Tamil Ga Vetti Kazhagam (TVK) and a former actor, has assumed the role of Chief Minister.
Vijay contested from the Perambur and Trichy East constituencies, winning both. However, after taking office, he decided to retain the Perambur seat and resigned from Trichy East, paving the way for a by-election.
Following the acceptance of his resignation, one seat in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly has become vacant. An official press release from the Tamil Nadu Assembly Secretariat announced that the inaugural session of the newly elected Assembly will begin at 9:30 AM on Monday. All elected members are instructed to be present in the house to take their oaths.
The Secretariat has also directed the legislators to bring their election certificates while attending the Assembly’s inaugural session.
The significance of this Assembly session is heightened as it symbolizes the formal commencement of Vijay’s new government, which emerged after dramatic electoral results, marking the first time TVK has come to power.
