Chennai, May 11: The inaugural session of the newly elected Tamil Nadu Assembly will begin on Monday at 9:30 AM. Acting Speaker M.V. Karuppaiya will administer oaths to all newly elected legislators from the Tamilaga Vettir Katchi (TVK), led by C. Joseph Vijay, who heads the new government.
Prior to the assembly session, Karuppaiya took an oath as the acting speaker during a ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan in Chennai on Sunday.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath to the Cholavandan MLA, who will preside over the initial proceedings of the assembly until the election of the speaker.
Elections for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Assembly are scheduled for the following day.
On Sunday, TVK leader Vijay took the oath as the 13th Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The grand ceremony was attended by political leaders, film industry personalities, party workers, and supporters.
Governor Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy to Vijay, who then proceeded to the Tamil Nadu Secretariat to formally assume the Chief Minister’s role.
Vijay’s swearing-in marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and AIADMK.
The actor-turned-politician assumed office after the TVK emerged as the largest party in the recent assembly elections, winning 108 seats in the 234-member assembly.
Although the party fell short of a majority on its own, the TVK leader secured the necessary 118 seats with the support of coalition partners, including Congress, CPI, CPI (M), VCK, and IUML.
With this backing, the TVK-led coalition has garnered support from 120 legislators, paving the way for the formation of the new government.
Alongside Vijay, nine ministers also took their oaths as members of the new cabinet.
The assembly session commencing on Monday is expected to mark the formal start of legislative business for the new government, with all eyes on the priorities and policy direction under Vijay’s leadership in the coming days.
