Madrid, May 9: Spain’s Health Secretary Javier Padilla announced on Friday that health officials have taken necessary measures following the detection of a suspected hantavirus case in the eastern city of Alicante.
According to Padilla, the individual had traveled on the same flight as an infected person a few weeks ago. Symptoms consistent with hantavirus infection have been observed in this individual, but officials are still investigating the case to confirm its validity.
Additionally, Padilla confirmed that all 14 Spanish passengers aboard the MV Hondius have voluntarily agreed to quarantine to minimize the risk of spreading the infection. This Dutch-operated cruise ship is currently en route to Spain’s Canary Islands and has been linked to three deaths so far.
A team from Spain’s Health Ministry is set to depart for Tenerife on Saturday, with the ship expected to arrive there on Sunday. Passengers will be disembarked using small boats and will then be taken under strict isolation procedures. Spanish nationals aboard will be quarantined in Madrid.
On Friday, the UK Health Security Agency reported that two British citizens on Tristan da Cunha Island in the South Atlantic have tested positive for hantavirus, with another individual suspected of infection. The agency stated that no British citizens aboard the MV Hondius are currently showing symptoms, but all are being closely monitored. Upon returning to the UK, all British passengers and crew will be required to remain in isolation for 45 days.
British government officials will also be present in Tenerife on Sunday to assist British citizens disembarking from the ship. According to the agency, seven British citizens disembarked from the ship on April 24 at Saint Helena Island. Two of them have returned to the UK and are in isolation at home, showing no symptoms. Four individuals remain in Saint Helena, while the whereabouts of the seventh person have been traced outside the UK.
