Tirupati, 30 December: Ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, the Indian cricket team is set to play a series against New Zealand consisting of three One Day Internationals and five T20 matches. The team, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, has already been announced. The T20 series is scheduled to begin on 26 January.
Before the series, Indian T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav visited the Sri Venkateswara Swami Temple in Tirumala. On the occasion of Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Suryakumar Yadav, along with his wife Devisha Shetty, offered prayers and performed rituals at the temple. After the darshan, priests blessed them inside the Ranganayakulavari Mandapam. They also offered sacred food and adorned the deity with new garments.
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams officials arranged the visit for Suryakumar Yadav. Both he and his wife received a warm welcome from temple staff and devotees present. The Indian captain and his wife were dressed in traditional attire during the visit.
Concerns remain over Suryakumar Yadav’s form ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026. Once regarded as one of the most dangerous and top-ranked T20 batsmen, he has been out of form for a significant period. The year 2025 proved difficult for him, as he failed to score a half-century in his last 23 T20 matches. His performance will be crucial for India’s title defence in the upcoming World Cup.
India is the current T20 World Cup champion, having won the title under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy by defeating South Africa in 2024. The next World Cup will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The Indian team will aim to retain the championship on home soil.
