Mumbai, May 5: The Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a thrilling 6-wicket victory against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Wankhede Stadium on Monday. This win marked a significant turnaround for MI, who had faced four consecutive losses earlier in the season. Under the captaincy of Surya Kumar Yadav, who stepped in for Hardik Pandya, MI achieved their highest chase of the season.
After the match, Yadav praised both Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma for their outstanding performances. He stated, “This season, the team has often found itself in challenging situations. This was not new. The period after the powerplay—especially between the 7th and 10th overs—is crucial for changing the game’s momentum, and that’s when we planned our comeback. LSG was in a strong position at one point, with their score around 110 after 8-9 overs. Our bowlers took responsibility and helped us bounce back.”
Yadav also noted that in today’s game, targets of 220-230 runs are achievable, recalling a recent match where they lost despite scoring 243 runs.
Praising the opening partnership of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, Yadav remarked, “Both batsmen provided the strong start we expected. Their batting made it seem like they had complete control over the match. Rohit returned fully fit and entertained the crowd immensely. His batting was incredible. Naman and Jacks also finished the innings well.”
LSG batted first, scoring 228 runs for 5 wickets, thanks to Nicholas Pooran’s explosive 63 runs off just 21 balls.
Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton opened for MI, forming a remarkable partnership of 143 runs for the first wicket in just 10.5 overs, completely shifting the game in MI’s favor. Rickelton scored 83 runs off 32 balls, hitting 8 sixes and 6 fours, while Rohit contributed 84 runs off 44 balls, with 7 sixes and 6 fours. Naman Dheer and Will Jacks remained unbeaten, scoring 23 and 10 runs, respectively. Rickelton was named Player of the Match.
