Aizawl, May 8: Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi emphasized the need for focused and continuous efforts to enhance the export of Mizoram’s horticultural and agricultural products in both domestic and international markets.
Last year, Mizoram was declared ‘India’s Ginger Capital’ by the NITI Aayog, recognizing its significant ginger production and growing contributions in this sector.
The minister highlighted Mizoram’s strategic importance, despite its relatively small population and geographical area. The state is uniquely positioned at the tri-junction of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh, making it a key player in India’s ‘Act East Policy.’
Gopi expressed satisfaction over Mizoram’s gradual improvement in connectivity, particularly with the ongoing development of a robust railway network. He also pointed out the importance of exploring ways to establish more hydropower projects to ensure the state becomes self-sufficient in its electricity needs.
On Thursday, the Union Minister visited Kolasib and held an interactive meeting with heads of various government departments in the district’s Deputy Commissioner’s conference room. During the session, a PowerPoint presentation showcased an overview of Kolasib district. The minister expressed his pleasure in meeting the local people and government officials.
He stressed the significance of conducting a census, stating that it provides an accurate understanding of people’s living conditions and demographic realities, which is crucial for government planning and development strategies.
Gopi reiterated the need for more central schools (KVs), expressing concern that there is currently only one KV in the entire state. He suggested that the matter should be raised with Members of Parliament to increase the number of these schools.
Recognizing that women’s education plays a vital role in national development, Gopi emphasized the necessity of encouraging more women to pursue careers in fields like nursing. He stated that as long as the quality of education is maintained, children can achieve great heights in their future.
He underscored the need for dedicated efforts to export horticultural and agricultural products not only to other states but also internationally.
During the discussion, various departments informed the minister about their operations and officially presented their needs and grievances.
Additionally, Minister Gopi visited an oil palm processing mill in Bukvanneii, where he engaged directly with local oil palm farmers.
