Supreme Court to Address Pollution and Firecracker Issues in Delhi-NCR Ahead of Diwali

The Supreme Court will hear cases related to pollution, stubble burning, and green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR on Thursday.

New Delhi, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : The Supreme Court is set to hear important cases concerning rising pollution levels, stubble burning, and the sale of “green” firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) this Thursday.

This hearing comes amid growing concerns over deteriorating air quality in the region, particularly during the festive season. The court is expected to discuss not only the manufacturing and use of firecrackers but also other measures to mitigate pollution in the area.

Under a previous order from the Supreme Court, a complete ban was imposed on the manufacture, storage, and use of all types of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR. These restrictions were aimed at addressing the pollution crisis and limiting activities that could further degrade air quality.

However, during a prior hearing, the Supreme Court hinted at easing some of these restrictions. The court allowed firecracker manufacturers to produce “green” firecrackers for the Delhi-NCR region but clarified that this does not imply permission for their sale.

The court emphasized that while manufacturing green firecrackers might be permitted under proposed exemptions, their sale remains prohibited. Therefore, the upcoming hearing will be crucial in determining whether the sale of these products can be authorized before Diwali.

Additionally, the Supreme Court directed the central government to engage with all stakeholders and work towards establishing a balanced policy regarding the manufacture and use of firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.
