New Delhi, May 15: The Supreme Court has annulled the Delhi High Court’s decision that provided relief to former BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is serving a life sentence in the Unnao rape case. The Supreme Court has instructed the Delhi High Court to re-examine the case.
In December 2025, the Delhi High Court had granted Sengar bail, suspending his life sentence. This ruling sparked widespread outrage and debate across the country, prompting the CBI to appeal to the Supreme Court.
A bench comprising Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Joymalya Bagchi heard the CBI’s appeal and overturned the High Court’s decision. The Supreme Court emphasized that there are several aspects of the case that require serious reconsideration by the High Court.
The Supreme Court directed the Delhi High Court to either deliver a verdict on the appeal against Sengar’s sentence within three months or issue a new order regarding the suspension of the sentence.
Previously, in December 2025, the Supreme Court had also stayed the Delhi High Court’s bail order and issued notices to Sengar and the Uttar Pradesh government.
Sengar was convicted in 2019 by a special CBI court in the Unnao rape case, receiving a life sentence for raping a minor girl. The case garnered national attention, with the victim and her family alleging continuous threats and harassment from Sengar and his associates.
Additionally, Sengar is serving a 10-year sentence related to a separate case involving the death of the victim’s father in custody. In January 2026, the Delhi High Court rejected another plea to suspend his sentence in that case, stating that Sengar’s criminal record is severe and no new grounds had emerged.
